The NDIS offers a range of accommodation plans, each with different funding criteria.
The three most popular plans are:
1. Short Term Accommodation (STA)
2. Medium Term Accommodation (MTA)
3. Supported Independent Living (SIL)
Short Term Accommodation (STA)
Short Term Accommodation, also known as Respite Care, is designed for people who require temporary accommodation for up to 28 days per year. NDIS allows only 14 days of accommodation at one time, which means you can only get 14 days of funding at a time. You can break these 28 days into weekly or monthly respite plans.
The funding for STA covers not only accommodation but also personal care, meals, and activities. The funding is released as a group price, which means you can share the funding with other NDIS participants under STA. However, some individual supports may not be funded by NDIS, in which case you may have to use funds from your core budget for STA individual supports.
Medium Term Accommodation (MTA)
Medium Term Accommodation is designed for people who require temporary accommodation for up to 90 days. Unlike STA, the funding for MTA only covers accommodation. If you require support or meals, you may have to pay for them yourself. MTA is intended for people who have a permanent residential place. NDIS has daily limits for MTA accommodation, and if you choose accommodation that charges more than the daily limits, you will have to pay the extra price from your pocket.
Supported Independent Living (SIL)
Supported Independent Living is an accommodation plan that provides support based on individual requirements. NDIS assesses the amount of support a participant requires and creates a funding criterion based on this assessment. A person may require support 7 days a week, so NDIS will discuss the monthly, weekly, and annual funding value with the NDIS provider. SIL funding covers cooking, daily assistance, transportation, cleaning, and social activities.
There are three types of support levels for SIL: Low, Standard, and High. The level of support a person receives determines the funding they receive. There is no pre-defined budget for a SIL support plan, as the funding is determined by the individual requirements of the participant.
