Process Instructions: The Power of Verbs

When it comes to creating process maps, step-by-step instructions, or business procedures, the choice of verbs matters. Process mapping is like creating a visual GPS for your business. It helps identify bottlenecks, streamline workflows and improve productivity. 

So you’ve done all the hard work: gathered the information for the process, identified all the key steps and created a flowchart to visualise the process – but now it’s time to describe those process steps!


Verbs in Action

These ‘doing words’ provide direction, clarity, and urgency. When describing process steps, use active verbs to guide your audience/readers. Here are some verbs and examples:

  • Execute: Take action.
    E.g. “Execute the participant’s personalised care plan.”

  • Implement: Put a plan into effect.
    E.g. “Implement assistive technology recommendations.”

  • Deliver: Complete a task.
    E.g. “Deliver support services during home visits.”

  • Accomplish: Achieve a goal.
    E.g. “Accomplish participant outcomes through therapy sessions.”

  • Complete: Finish an action.
    E.g. “Complete progress reports for funding purposes”

  • Contact: Reach out.
    E.g. “Contact the participant’s support coordinator.”

  • Fill out: Complete a form.
    E.g. “Fill out the NDIS service agreement.”

  • Check: Verify thoroughly.
    E.g. “Check eligibility criteria for new participants.”

  • Arrange: Organise in order.
    E.g. “Arrange transportation for community access activities.”

  • Assemble: Put components together.
    E.g. “Assemble a multidisciplinary team for complex cases.”
