Spotlight Series
Like many in the sector who had seen first-hand the way services were delivered in the past, Tracy saw an opportunity to innovate. The drive to make a difference was clear and her experience from other sectors also carried through. With that, Disability Destinations was established in 2020 amid the COVID –19 outbreak. Having survived a turbulent first year gave her the confidence that she was heading in the right direction. Pun intended.
Accountability and Preparation
In the first week of business, Tracy expressed, “I want to be held accountable.” She began the registration process that week and invested in the service of Centro ASSIST to support her in writing the policies and processes needed to run a sustainable business. She completed a business plan, organised her insurances, designed a logo, and built a website before she even had her first client.
The Impact of COVID-19
Then COVID hit. Determined not to be beaten before she had even begun, she sent out introductory emails to everyone she knew and had her first client within a week. “I thought COVID would stop my business in its tracks, but being able to prove early on that I was set up for business, having a strong understanding of the industry and many valuable business connections already in place, as well as lived experience, proved to be the winning formula,” Tracy shared.
From Sole Trader to Team
Initially, Tracy worked as a sole trader with just one participant and his family. Word quickly spread of the service being provided. With person-centred practice as a key element in providing services, Tracy’s business has grown into a well-established, reputable, registered disability service provider with a dedicated, hardworking, and passionate team. This team has closely supported over 200 participants of the NDIS, delivering more than 300 individualised respite, day trip, and support work services in-home and away from their homes all around Australia, while allowing their carers a chance for much-needed breaks.
Navigating challenges in the NDIS environment
It hasn’t always been easy though. They’ve successfully completed two registrations, are about to do their mid-term audit, and have had to review business plans and concepts as the NDIS environment has shifted direction. Trying to remain relevant amongst a growing industry of grassroots businesses with similar ideas and competing costs, as well as remaining compliant, has had its fair share of challenges. But with the support of services like Centro ASSIST, and their amazing team, past and present, who have understood everyone’s individual stories and abilities, it has made the journey so much easier to navigate. As Tracy states, “Happiness is in the Journey.”
Looking ahead
Disability Destinations continues to grow and support people at all stages of their journey while working closely with their formal and informal supports to provide a wide range of activities for participants in various locations across Australia. Tracy is excited to plan for the future and expand on the services offered to all people living with disability, and adds, “We’re always looking for new ways to support people and raise awareness around disability needs.”
